Underneath her clothes.

My mum and I have these morning conversations before work and most of the time they give me my daily themes. Today we talked about how Vera Sidika ย and Corazon Kwamboka’s bodies are insane. Every Kenyan could tell you who these two ladies are. Brought to the limelight because of their assets… i.e small waists and big assets…(ass)ets… Hahaha.. get the hint?

The big debate was who’s was bigger. In my efforts to try and explain the extant of Corazon’s using hand gestures and strange and sometimes irrelevant comparisons, my mum threw in a statement that I simply chose to laugh at because it seemed so barbaric and insane to me. She said “Yo know nowadays all women want that body. Girls are even eating chicken feed and taking ARVs to gain weight and get that kind of body.” It’s the way she said it like it’s been happening forever and I should have known!

I decided to do some research on this ass-gaining craze and it’s astonishing how women across the world are doing all these crazy things just to attempt to fit in or to bank a man. Underneath many women’s clothes, are chicken feed, ARV’s, injections and creams. Look around Nairobi and see how women and girls go through hell for attention. Short shorts and skirts even when it freezing cold outside just to turn heads. Six layers of concealer and so much mascara that they can barely blink because they’re trying to impress a man.

I’m not blaming them or anything, I actually wish that men could hold a conference and compile a list on what they’d want women to do. Because despite eating chicken feed, popping ARV pills, risking pneumonia with their short skirts and looking like pastries because of too much make up, 25% of women in my country are single or in an unhealthy relationship. Less than 10% have prospects of being married in the next five years and over 30% have been victims of infidelity in their relationships.

I’d have loved to blame it on female insecurities but the reality is that most of us are just trying to make it work, and some are willing to go to crazy extremes. It’ll be butt injections yesterday, ARVs today and depression tomorrow. All I’m going to tell my fellow Nairobi mamis is:Love thyself and love each other. I shared a YouTube video yesterday called "How to get an African man to marry you" It’s by a very beautiful Nigerian lady. She placed a lot of emphasis on how important aesthetic is to African men with a lot of humor attached to it. On how having a big butt is important in bagging yourself an African man. Now when that’s what we’re telling each other, we can clearly see the widespread nature of many African women. And if African men don’t want to be perceived as these vacant minded humans that turn their heads at aesthetic beauty instead of inner beauty, intellect and enlightenment, they need to step up and change the statistics on the percentage of men cheating on their partners, beating their wives or disrespecting their women.

Parting Shot: My mum always says, when you are good enough for yourself, you will be good enough for everyone else.
